About the Opportunity

Client / Customer Service Planning:

  • In conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer and Senior Manager, Accounting, formulates and implements procurement, financial planning, budgeting, cash management and investment strategies and reporting vehicles that support the goals, operations and priorities of the organization
  • Provides expertise related to the definition and monitoring of financial resources required to achieve departmental, divisional and organizational goals

Client / Customer Service Delivery:

  • Leads the finance division in the development and implementation of procurement, finance (costing, analysis, reporting, etc.) and budget in support of the client departments and divisions throughout the organization, as well as for special, cross functional projects and initiatives
  • Develops information and analysis to support the Finance division, senior management and Convocation to define the financial resources required to achieve departmental, divisional and organizational goals

People Leadership:

  • Hires, trains, develops and evaluates employees accountable to the Director in accordance with the policies of the organization and best human resources practices
  • Fosters a positive work environment by clarifying goals, building the commitment of individuals, strengthening the group’s collective skills and encouraging creativity and problem solving

Financial Responsibility:

  • Leads the development and monitoring of the operating and capital budget, liaising with department managers, senior management, outside organizations  and committees to approve and implement budgets, analyze variances, and adjust plans as required
  • Directs the cash management and investment and procurement functions of the organization, has signing authority for all payments, and recommends approval for all major capital expenditures
  • Oversees the financial systems integration and financial reporting functions, approving in principle the application of technology to enhance financial management
  • Manages contracts for services with vendors and outsourced service providers, some with impact across the organization such as arrangements for print, mail and copy services, corporate travel agent and office supplies

Policy Development:

  • Works closely with senior management and relevant committees in the formulation and articulation of financial policy needs, procedures and best practices of the organization
  • Provides guidance to the Financial Policy function to manage the secretarial support for the Audit and Finance Committee, prioritize research and policy initiatives and undertake projects
  • Acts as 2IC in the absence of the Chief Financial Officer, and takes a lead role in developing, communicating and implementing financial policies and procedures throughout the organization

Special Projects and Initiatives:

  • Initiates, plans and coordinates collaborative activities in order to carry out a variety of ongoing and special projects across the organization, including continuous development and improvement of financial applications and reporting systems, management processes, and research and analysis of new initiatives
  • Takes a lead role in ensuring accuracy, integrity and professionalism of financial data collection, analysis and presentation, budgeting, forecasting and reporting for departmental, divisional and special project initiatives

Team Membership:

  • Actively participates with other members of the management and senior management team in the change management process, providing support and consistency of approach related to finance, budget and cash management
  • Acts as a resource to various teams, committees, departments and divisions, communicating policies, standards and best practices for the accuracy and integrity of financial resources, management and reporting

About You

  • A university undergraduate degree plus completion of a recognized accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA), or alternately a Master’s degree in Business or Public Administration, or equivalent
  • A minimum of 10 years’ related experience in finance, budget formulation and financial reporting, preferably experience working with a not-for-profit organization.  At least 5 years would be required working at senior management level
  • Broad understanding of the workings of North American financial markets
  • Thorough knowledge of fund accounting, financial markets, investment management, cash flow techniques, budgeting techniques, financial analysis and reporting and policy research methods
  • Solid understanding of general accounting, particularly GAAP for not-for-profit organizations and controller functions, including accounts payable, procurement, reconciliations and reporting
  • Thorough understanding of the impact of technology on the finance and accounting function, particularly with respect to analysis and presentation of financial information
  • Expressive and persuasive in both spoken and written language for individual and / or group situations (Convocation, committees, management, senior management)
  • Interprets, applies and presents complex information in an audience appropriate manner
  • Thorough knowledge of financial software applications and spreadsheet analysis, particularly the use of database applications, queries and custom report generation

Salary Range

$165,000 - $180,000/year
