About the Opportunity

The Payroll Manager will be responsible for all aspects of administering and processing payroll for union and non-union staff while maintaining strong internal controls and confidentiality of private information, including:

  • Ensuring that payroll master tables are maintained to ensure timely and accurate payment of salaries and recording in the general ledger
  • Ensuring periodic and annual processing of bi-weekly and monthly payroll (including those for other legal entities) along with timely submission of statutory remittances and reporting
  • Ensure timely responses to staff or external parties (including government agencies
  • Working with the Supervisor, overseeing staff of 11 (union and non-union, part time and full time), including providing staff with educational opportunities to enhance skill set, including specific payroll knowledge and computer skills, responding to staff issues as needed, implementing corrective action to improve/correct workplace conditions, etc.
  • Resolve system issues in a timely and efficient manner by working collaboratively with other parties e.g. Human Resources, Finance, software vendor, Database Administrator, etc
  • Implement and conduct payroll data quality reviews/audits for accuracy and completeness purposes
  • Develop and/or maintain standard and custom reports to facilitate payroll data review, analysis and reporting internal and external
  • Manage payroll system upgrades, interface testing and special projects as required
  • Advisor when called upon to represent the interests of the Payroll department
  • Monitor bulletins from various agencies and associations e.g. Canada Revenue Agency, Canadian Payroll Association, etc and ensure changes are implemented as applicable
  • Prepare and manage annual department budget through monthly review of management reports and preparation of periodic forecasts as required
  • Prepare year-end audit schedules and report to auditors during interim and annual financial and any other external agency audits
  • Ensure corporate and departmental policies and procedures are maintained, updated and adhered to
  • Compiling financial information for analysis purposes routine and adhoc requests
  • Collaborate with other hospitals to enable best practices
  • Other duties as required

About You

  • Minimum 5 to 7 years payroll management experience in a high volume, large sized organization (Payroll consists of approximately 8,000 staff operating in a multiple union and non-union environment
  • Post-secondary degree preferably in business/accounting at a university or college coupled with successful completion of Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) certification with extensive knowledge of Canadian payroll practices and principles
  • A multi-tasker with strong problem solving skills  proactive self-starter with the ability to handle multiple job responsibilities, set priorities, hands-on experience to problem solve, manage special projects and assignments while working with all levels of staff clerical and supervisory; union and non-union while appreciating the responsibility of meeting tight and conflicting deadlines
  • Experience with complex systems that integrate with an accounting system
  • Ability to work collaboratively with human resources and accounting departments
  • Demonstrated competence with Microsoft Office suite of products, in particular Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Experience with addressing internal and external inquiries either directly or by engaging support staff
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Hands-on experience with leading system upgrades or conversions
  • Flexibility to work off-hours in time sensitive situations

Salary

$110,000 - $115,000/year
