About the Opportunity 

  • Lead the payroll department to complete the biweekly payroll processing for salary and hourly employees which includes non-union, union, part time staff, ensuring that employees are paid accurately and on time 
  • Auditing and balancing payrolls prior to processing 
  • Analyze and process payroll and benefit expenses to the financial systems ensuring accurate operational reporting 
  • Maintain payroll system which includes working with customer support teams to implement best practices 
  • Coach, mentor and develop the Payroll and Benefits Administrator to rise to their full potential while providing timely, constructive and consistent feedback and personal development opportunities 
  • Act as the first point of contact for all payroll, time & attendance, and benefits related inquiries from internal departments and staff, responding with a service-oriented approach of prompt, courteous, and timely communication 
  • Act as the primary point of contact for managerial staff concerning time and attendance system training and inquiries or issues 
  • Responsible for recurring and ad-hoc report generation for payroll-related information, as well as the development of new or custom reports 
  • Collaborate with the HR team in support of employee onboarding, changes, and terminations, as well as  all aspects of team operations, projects, and other related matters; provide insight, ideas, and solutions 
  • Keep current with all payroll legislation. Provide advice and guidance on all payroll matters including payroll systems, record keeping, analysis, and reporting 
  • Preparing and updating Standard Operating Procedure Manual(s) as required to support the Payroll Department and Supervisors/Managers 
  • Interpret changes to new conditions in the Collective Agreement (renewals and changes, including the determination of retro-active amounts and benefits), and work with payroll system to implement those changes 
  • Prepares written correspondence and communication to fellow employees and third party agencies 
  • Identifies system related problems, legislative changes and interpretations and provides recommendations to all levels of management for enhancements or changes 
  • Responsible for the accuracy and production of T4’s 
  • Administer and analyze benefits processes, costs and trends 

Audit payroll and benefit data assessing data integrity and that processes and controls are being upheld by employees, including: 

  • Reviewing legislative requirements, company policies, collective agreement and setup of “ADP Workforce Now” align 
  • Prepare, post and reconcile journal entries to the Finance G/L monthly 
  • Continually strive for operational excellence, seek ways to streamline processes, create operational efficiencies and foster a culture of continuous improvement 
  • Develop and execute training sessions for management and employees 
  • Support system updates, lead implementation of new interfaces and change management testing as required 
  • Perform other duties as assigned

About You 

  • College diploma or degree in Accounting, HR or other related field 
  • CPM (Canadian Payroll Management) designation or working towards, or equivalent experience 
  • Minimum five (5) years related experience leading a payroll department with direct reports, ideally with different categories of staff (non-union, union, contract, hourly/salary) and benefits administration 
  • Significant experience with payroll software, other third party payroll providers and an in-house payroll system 
  • Can demonstrate ability to lead  systems changes and upgrades within payroll 
  • Ability to uphold the companies values and goals and collaborate with your fellow colleges to ensure they are met 
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, including intermediate Excel – pivot tables, vlookups and formulas for reporting, metrics and data validation 
  • Excellent analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills 
  • Excellent communication, presentation, collaboration and influencing skills across internal and external stakeholders 
  • Capable of planning and organizing payroll projects while managing competing priorities 
  • Ability to showcase resourceful leadership skills where issues are identified and resolved 
  • Experience delivering structured coaching to staff and all aspects of employee recruitment, retention and performance management with commitment to professional development and continuous learning
  • Possess an attention to detail 
  • Team player 

Hourly Rate 
$35 - $45/hour
